A KALEIDOSCOPE OF JAPAN -A CROSS CURRICULUM UNIT

Ask the students if they can relate to the analogy of a kaleidoscope and understanding the culture of Japan. Web their ideas. Point out that a kaleidoscope has pieces of glass (bits of knowledge) that when moved and reflected by mirrors (ourselves) and light (insight), provide an endless variety of beautiful patterns (understanding). The pieces of glass are not nearly as beautiful alone, as when arranged together to form a radiant pattern. When all our bits of knowledge about Japan come together, we will gain a deep understanding of its beautiful multi-faceted culture.
